An Introduction to NEON Remote Sensing Data and Scaling Opportunities with EMIT

EDS Seminar Series. Bridget Hass discusses An Introduction to NEON Remote Sensing Data and Scaling Opportunities with EMIT

Speaker: Bridget Hass, NEON

Abstract:
This talk will provide a brief overview of the National Ecological Observatory Network’s (NEON) remote sensing datasets, and demonstrate scaling opportunities between NEON and satellite data, focusing on NASA’s EMIT (Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation) mission. Both NEON and EMIT deliver hyperspectral reflectance imagery, and these two complementary datasets present a unique opportunity to develop scaling workflows in preparation for NASA's upcoming Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) mission. In this talk, we explore scale and resolution trade-offs, and illustrate how NEON and EMIT data can be used together to generate high-resolution ecological models at regional and continental scales. The talk will end with a data demonstration highlighting these two datasets, generated with openly available code in Python and Google Earth Engine. Code used for these demonstrations will be provided for participants to explore on their own.

Speaker Bio:
Bridget Hass is a Data Scientist at NEON and splits her time between the Airborne Observation Platform (AOP) and Data Skills teams. She enjoys working in a variety of capacities at NEON, mainly centered around the remote sensing data. Some of her roles include generating AOP data products, maintaining and developing the processing and QA/QC pipeline, improving data management practices, conducting calibration and validation field work, and creating training resources for working with AOP and NEON data. Prior to working in airborne research at NEON, she received her Master’s degree from Oregon State University specializing in marine geophysics, and worked at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, supporting marine geophysical expeditions.
