Kyle is an interdisciplinary environmental scientist focusing on the intersection of social-ecological systems and global change ecology. He received a B.A. in Environmental Studies from the University of Colorado Boulder and a Ph.D. in Earth System Science from the University of California Irvine. His doctoral research focused on developing and applying new approaches using data driven modeling and social sensing data to map, model, and value cultural ecosystem services and future impacts of climate change to these services in understudied regions of the world. His postdoctoral position with EarthLab is part of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) Visiting Postdoctoral Fellows program. His research focuses on the social-ecological impacts of wildfire and prescribed fire in the US West from the perspective of impacts to, and impacts from the use of, cultural ecosystem services, specifically focusing on recreation. He also works on studying the linkages between urbanization and fire risk in the global wildland-urban interface.
