Integrating linguistic, cultural, and environmental data to investigate complex social-ecological systems: A linguist's perspective

EDS Seminar speaker series. Hannah Haynie presents a linguist's perspective on integrating linguistic, cultural, and environmental data to investigate complex social-ecological systems

Title: Integrating linguistic, cultural, and environmental data to investigate complex social-ecological systems: A linguist's perspective
Speaker: Hannah Haynie, University of Colorado Boulder

Abstract:
Linguistics may not be the first field that comes to mind in considering how humans are integrated into ecosystems. However, bringing together linguistic data alongside cultural and environmental data is a useful approach for answering questions not only about language but also about how human systems develop in the context of their environments. This talk focuses on three elements of this approach: 1) the curation and interoperability of linguistic and cultural datasets; 2) the use of linguistic, cultural, and environmental data to examine complex systems and processes that link humans to their environments at multiple spatial and temporal scales; and 3) opportunities to advance our understanding of the past and potentially our view on the future through truly interdisciplinary collaboration involving language and linguistics.

Speaker Bio:
Hannah Haynie is an Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research focuses largely on the evolution of languages and cultures, understanding linguistic diversity, and investigating the wide range of human grammars.
